Reuben Jeffery, the U.S. former Under Secretary of State for Economic, Energy, and Agricultural Affairs, visited SIIS and met with SIIS President Yang Jiemian in SIIS new office building.
President Yang talked with Mr. Jeffery about the trend of the current global financial crisis. Jeffery held that most of the economic analysts had a cautious but positive attitude toward it, since there are many positive signals, i.e., the growth rate is up to 0%—2% from the lowest -6%, the American stock market seems to grow, the stimulation plans have seen positive effect, and the system of America’s major banks are basically sound and strengthened by measures taken by U.S. Treasury. Besides, Mr. Jeffery held that the opinion that China has taken advantages of this crisis is not the mainstream view in America. The issue by now is how to further strengthen the Sino-U.S. relations. The Sino-U.S. relations is not only a bilateral one, their cooperation should expand in broader international affairs. Mr. Jeffery congratulated President Yang for his taking the position as the coordinator standard for China of Trilateral Commission and Jeffery believed that China’s participation is a revolutionary development of Trilateral Commission.
