Former Slovenian President Visits SIIS and Talks about his Campaign for Next Secretary-General of UN

On June 23, H.E. Danilo Turk visited SIIS and delivered a speech. Before the speech, Mr. Turk held meetings with SIIS President Chen Dongxiao, SIIS Vice President Yang Jian, and Professor Yang Jiemian, Chairman of SIIS Academic Council.
Born in 1952, H.E. Danilo Turk is a world famous politician, diplomat, jurist and expert on global governance. He became the first Slovenian representative to the UN in 1992. Afterwards, he was twice nominated as the President of the UN Security Council. In 2000, he served as UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs. Between November 2007 and December 2012, he served as Slovenian President. Now he is considered a popular candidate for the next Secretary-General of the UN.

Prof. Yang Jiemian, Chairman of SIIS Academic Council, introduced SIIS history and academic achievements to H.E. Danilo Turk. The latter recalled vividly his meeting with former Chinese President Hu Jintao.
 
In his speech, H.E. Danilo Turk set forth his opinions about the transformation of international system, UN reform, Sino-European relations, 16+1 Mechanism, One Belt One Road Initiative, Sino-Slovenian relations and other issues. When talking about his campaign for next Secretary-General of UN, he said if he won, he would devote himself to contributing to a more efficient UN in the 21st century. As for his campaign slogan, he admitted not having one yet and welcomed all the advice from SIIS experts.
