The Fourth CICA Think Tank Roundtable was held in Shanghai Hongqiao State Guest Hotel on Oct. 17-18, 2015, attended by more than 50 participants from think tanks and diplomatic missions of 13 CICA member states and observer states.
China’s Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping delivered a keynote speech for the meeting, surveying the Asia-Pacific security landscape, interpreting the security-development nexus, and proposing closer cooperation on CICA institution building.
Representatives exchanged views on regional security concepts, security mechanisms, the relationship between security and development, and the prospects of CICA institution building. Experts agreed that although emerging positive factors had helped ease regional tensions, serious security challenges remained and that with its uniqueness, CICA has secured an increasingly important role in the future Asian security architecture. At the same time, the organization needed to strengthen its relevance by updating and improving its security concepts and mechanisms.
Think tank roundtable is a spin-off intellectual forum under the auspices of CICA. Inaugurated on the eve of the 2014 CICA Summit, the forum aims at providing intellectual support and building consensus on regional security issues. The next think tank roundtable will be held in Shanghai in April 2016.
