International Symposium on The Rise of the South at a Crossroads: China-Latin America Economic Relationship held at SIIS

On May 9, 2016, an international symposium on the Rise of the South at a Crossroads: China-Latin America Economic Relationship was co-hosted by SIIS and Latin America and the Caribbean Department of World Bank in Shanghai. This joint event is aimed to enhance China-Latin America and the Caribbean economic cooperation in the context of slow economic recovery by exploring the effectiveness, challenges and future of China-Latin America economic relations.
Prof. Yang Jiemian, Chairman of SIIS Academic Committee gave opening remarks. More than 30 participants from Chinese Foreign Ministry, China Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University, Consulate-General of Brazil, Cuba and Chile in Shanghai, Kemu Business Consultancy Co., Ltd., Irrational Innovation Fund etc. joined the discussion. Mr. Augusto de la Torre, World Bank Chief Economist for Latin America and the Caribbean, Prof. Chai Yu, Assistant Director of the Institute for Latin American Studies of CASS, and Mr. Wu Qijin, General Manager of China Latin America Cooperation Fund delivered their keynote speeches. Commentators include Mr. Li Bin, Senior official, Department of Latin America and the Caribbean, Ministry of Chinese Foreign Affairs, Ms. Margaret Myers, Director of the China and Latin America Program, Inter-American Dialogue, Mr. Jorge Heine, Ambassador of Chile to China, Prof. Zhang Haibing, Director of the Institute for World Economic Studies, Prof. Niu Haibin, Deputy Director of the Center for American Studies, SIIS etc. The invitees had an intensive discussion on Latin America and the Rising South: Changing World, Changing Priorities, China’s internal rebalancing and its implications for Latin America-China economic relations, and China’s investments in Latin America, Past, Present and Future. Prof. Yan Anlin, Vice President of SIIS had a meeting with some attendees after the symposium.
