Shanghai Association for Japanese Studies, Shanghai Association for Japanese Studies and Exchanges and Shanghai Institute for International Studies jointly held a symposium of “The 30th Anniversary of the Signing of Sino-Japanese Friendship Treaty”. The symposium was presided by Wu Jinan, Deputy Director of SIIS Academic Commission and V. President of Shanghai Association for Japanese Studies, and participated by over 30 specialists from universities and institutes based in Shanghai.

The meeting recalled the arduous times in concluding the “Sino-Japanese Friendship Treaty” and fully confirmed the contribution of the treaty made to the development of Sino-Japanese relations. Participants believed the bilateral relations were facing a new historical turning point. The world today is heading towards multipolarization. China has grown fast in its comprehensive national strength over the last 30 years. The Japanese elites and the public alike seem to be little ready for “two powers on a par”. The Sino-Japanese strategic mutual benefit relationship has yet to be reinforced in its foundation. At present, the bilateral relations is witnessing a new culmination. In order to transit the bilateral relations from reconciliation to harmony, China and Japan ought to further promote people-to-people exchanges to develop bilateral relations on the basis of looking for common values.
