Pervez Musharraf, former President of Pakistan, had a roundtable conversation with SIIS scholars at Hong Qiao State Guest Hotel Shanghai. Pervez Musharraf said that South Asia with one fourth of the world’s population is confronted with three big challenges: terrorism, India-Pakistan conflicts, and poverty. He analyzed the origins of terrorism, which he argued must be tackled in military, political and economic ways. Talking about the Sino-Pakistan relations, President Musharraf insisted that China should play a more active role in maintaining stability and promoting regional economic and social development in South Asia. Pakistan and China had traditional friendship and, in order to further promote the friendly relations, the two countries should strengthen exchanges and communications between two peoples, especial the young generations. During the conversation, SIIS President Yang Jiemian commented that the current world is undergoing a serious financial crisis, and a new multi-polar structure is under formation. In this new situation, China and Pakistan should make joint efforts to deal with poverty and other developmental problems. Besides, the two countries should step up consultation and cooperation in promoting the international financial system to develop in a fairer and more reasonable way. China’s 30 years’ reform and opening-up has created a new and higher platform for further development of China-Pakistan relations, for the two countries to strengthen their cooperation in all realms and for developing the bilateral relations with more foundations in the future.
