Seminar of “Cross-Strait Peaceful Development: Context and Paths”

The seminar on “Cross-Strait Peaceful Development: Context and Path” was held by Shanghai Institutes for International Studies(SIIS)at Hengshan Hotel on April 16th. About 40 scholars and experts involving Taiwan studies from some 20 institutes and universities based in Shanghai attended the seminar. The scholars and experts convinced that a precious historical opportunity has been appearing for the peaceful development of Cross-Straits relations since 2008. It is necessarily to embark on in-depth researches on the international environment of Cross-Straits peaceful development and the political, economic and social environment of Taiwan in order to seize the great opportunity to expand the connotations of Cross-Straits peaceful development continuously, to construct a framework of Cross-Straits peaceful development and to maintain the trend of the peaceful development irreversible. Focusing on the theme, the experts and scholars had discussed the Cross-Straits peaceful development in terms of international context, the environment of Taiwan and policy environment of the Cross-Straits peaceful development, and approaches and paths in promoting the Cross-Straits peaceful development and put forward constructive comments and recommendations. Mr. Yang Jianrong, Director of Taiwan Affairs Office in Shanghai, and SIIS President Yang Jiemian attended the seminar. It was the first seminar held by the Institute for Taiwan, Hongkong & Macao Studies (SIIS) since its establishment not long ago.
