Academic Seminar on Social Development and Gender Equality

Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Shanghai Women’s Studies Association co-held an academic seminar entitled Social Development and Gender Equality on October 13th at SIIS. Over forty scholars and experts of women studies from China and Germany participated in the seminar, including Dr. Rudolf Traub-Merz, Resident Director of Shanghai Coordination Office of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Shanghai Office, Ms. Li Rong, Vice President of Shanghai Women Studies Association, Prof. Yang Jian, Vice President of Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Prof. Ye Jiang, Executive Director of Institute for Global Governance Studies(SIIS). Vice President Yang Jian presided over the meeting and addressed the welcome speech.
Focused on the theme of social development and gender equality, scholars had an in-depth discussion on the social development and gender equality, changes of women’s social and political status, gender mainstreaming and global governance, violence against women, the development and evolution of feminist movement. Three experts delivered their key speeches during the meeting, including Prof. Dr. Beatrix Bouvier, director of the Museum and Study Centre of the Karl Marx House in Trier, whose speech entitled “Move as a Snail: from Women’s Rights of Election to Gender Equality Policy; Dr. Zhang Lu of Institute of Global Governance Studies(SIIS) lectured on Gender Mainstreaming in Global Governance from the Perspective of global movement of Anti-violence against women, and Prof. Zhu Qinjun of Shanghai Normal UNiversity spoke about the women’s political status and political participations in New China.
