On October 24, 2016, a seminar on the Diplomacy of Global City: Opportunity, Challenge, and Cooperative Governance was co-hosted by SIIS, the Institute for Urban and Environmental Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai Coordinating Center for World Cities Day with the supervision of the Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office. This seminar is one of the World Cities Day events.
Prof. Yang Jiemian, Chairman of SIIS Academic Affairs Committee, Mr. Fan Yufei, Deputy Director-General of Shanghai FAO, and Mr. Jin Chen, Secretary-General of the Committee of Shanghai Housing and Urban-Rural Development delivered opening remarks. They noted that the World Cities Day was an important platform for city diplomacy. Ambassador Yu Hongjun, member of Foreign Affairs Committee of CPPCC, former Vice Minister of the International Department of Central Committee of CPC, and Prof. Pan Jiahua, Director of the Institute for Urban and Environmental Studies of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences gave keynote speeches.
Other domestic invitees included officials, scholars and representatives of NGOs from Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu Province. Overseas guests included city representatives from Britain, Denmark, Germany, and Turkey. More than 30 participants had a discussion on the issues of becoming global cities: opportunities and challenges, cooperation among global cities in the context of global governance: diversified actors and networks, and cooperation among global cities in the framework of the UN 2030 Agenda: idea and approach. Prof. Yu Xintian, Chair of SIIS Consulting Committee gave a concluding remark.
