On October 30 and 31, 2019, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies co-hoststheInternational Conference on "China, US and Latin America Relations in a Transforming International Order”, in collaboration with the Center for Latin American Studies of Shanghai University and the Institute of Peaceful Development of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
The conference gathers more than 30 experts coming from Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai University, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, Fudan University, University of Pacific(Peru), São Paulo State University(Brazil), Federal University of ABC(Brazil), Pontifical Xavierian University (Colombia), National Autonomous University of Mexico(UNAM), Carter Center of the United States, Georgetown University (United States), Stanford University(United States), Regional Coordinator of Economic and Social Research (CRIES), Doctum University(Brazil), University of Duisburg-Essen and Brazilian Centre for International Relations(CEBRI).
Mr. Wang Liang, Division Director of the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb.Marcos Caramuru de Paiva, Former Brazilian ambassador to China, Prof. Cynthia Sanborn, Professor of the University of Pacific and Prof. Gonzalo Paz, Professor of Georgetown University, delivered keynote speeches. Prof. Chen Dongxiao, President of SIIS met with the participants, and Prof. Yan Anlin, Vice President of SIIS, attended the opening ceremony and delivered an opening speech.
The participants agree that it is the right time to investigate the regional order in Latin America and China, US and Latin America relations and have an in-depth discussion on strategic thinking and policy options of realizing constructive interaction among China, US and Latin America, current regional order in Latin America, comparative perspective on the strategic goals and policy options of China and the US towards Latin America, the area and prospectof the interaction among China, US and Latin America, etc. Participants also agreed that China's advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative into Latin America and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind have created opportunities for development to Latin America.Grasping such new opportunities not only needs understanding and cooperation from traditional forces, such as the United States or a "third party", but also requires joint efforts of China and Latin America, and the direct interaction between China and Latin America is even more important.
